Jean-Georges, Refreshed

One of Shang’s most beloved restos has been given a spiffy makeover by equally esteemed local design doyens Neri & Hu. NYC-import Jean-Georges has ruled the city’s culinary roost since launching in 2004 on the fourth floor of Gallic-colonial Three on the Bund, but after 12 years it was time for a nip and tuck.

White, elegant and clean-lined, the transformation is dramatic, creating a light, airy, pale-wood space with antique-mirrored walls – etched with French philosophical musings – reflecting the stagger Shang skyline and delicate, sparkling Art Deco accents throughout.

The opulent gents’ club masculinity of the former space has been rebooted for today’s tastes, while still respecting the original 1916 Beaux Arts building (plaster moldings and cornices were restored, while classical arched foyer columns were revealed for the first time). Contemporary brass lighting fixtures enhance the glamour, with a chic main dining room, bar lounge, show kitchen and three private dining chambers.

The mod French menu, with a tempting Asian twist, remains just as fabulous as ever, with a four-course prix-fixe dinner menu and two seven-course tasting options (one seasonal and the other chef’s selections). You can also pop in for a great value two-course lunch. Brilliant nosh, fine wines and riverfront Bund views... And, if you feel like you’re breathing easier, it’s because the state-of-the-art Atmos Air system creates mountain-fresh air quality. Count us in Jean-Georges.
