James Turrell: Immersive Light

Light art is becoming a huge global hit, and no one does it better than James Turrell. A magician of mood lighting and serene-meets-spiritual spaces that tap into changing colours and light patterns, he’s a pioneer of the artistic genre which immerses viewers like no other.

Shanghai’s hottest exhibition of the year – and one lighting up the world art calendar – sees the renowned Californian artist taking over the Long Museum West Bund with his epic works, showcasing a lifetime of experimentation with light, space and perspective.

James Turrell: Immersive Light is the first comprehensive retrospective of the 1943-born, LA artist in China, drawing from Turrell’s five-decade-long career, including light projections, spatial installations, photography and prints. A major new site-specific installation promises a consummate Turrell experience, transforming the space. Playing with sensory pleasure and bewildering perception, this is eye-opening, moving art.

Built by Atelier Deshaus in 2014, the private gallery is also a wow, all vaulted concrete and graceful Brutal forms. Past shows include a major exhibition celebrating Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson last year, with a permanent collection of traditional, revolutionary and contemporary Chinese art, alongside modern Asian and European pieces. Set on the banks of the Huangpu River in Xuhui, the site used to be a wharf for transporting coal. Fitting then, that we’ve now gone from black to white, and dark to light. Prepare to be amazed…
