How To… Get Frocked in Shanghai

Shanghai is China’s capital of couture, with elegant high-end looks for ladies aplenty. From luxe designer labels to trad local tailors, there is a clutch of elegant emporiums offering glam gowns. Here’s how to frock up Shanghai style…

One of Shanghai’s most established designers, Judy Hua is known for her skillfully cut, clean-lined modern creations, from sassy workwear to flowing, feminine eveningwear and custom pieces for artists and female entrepreneurs. Eye-catching graphic patterns and prints star, from bold black and white to hits of block colour against neutral hues, with this season’s SS17 look working a retro sporty glamour. Intricate pleats, cool cut-outs and a dash of deconstruction add edge.

Nanjing native Han Feng splits her time between Shanghai and New York, and has also dabbled in costume and exhibition design. Her feminine gowns and separates make simple yet theatrical use of colour, layering, volume and sinuous form, bringing a contempo, global update to Chinese aesthetics.

Shanghai-based, internationally fêted fashion designer Lu Kun is inspired by the city he loves and its sartorially daring women. Drawing on couture techniques, he dubs his post-fusion style ‘Shanghai chic’, blending independent attitude and girlish charm. His celeb-favoured brand Mikumkum offers RTW pieces including seductive silk dresses, with pretty print details, curve-hugging tailoring and a fun, youthful feel.

Finally, for qipao pizzazz (cheongsam in Cantonese), check out Ming Qing Fushi Dian, which stocks gorgeous trad Chinese body-con dresses in glossy hues. Bedazzling!
