East Meets West Wardrobe

June 22, 2015
Huishan Zhang

Chinese couture is certainly enjoying an extended moment in the Western limelight. There have been a number of notable names in the last decade, among them style stars like Vivienne Tam and Jason Wu. Why, even Anna Wintour (whose Costume Institute exhibit takes on China: Through the Looking Glass this year) will concede that the fashion world has trained its beady eye on the East for more than a passing glance.

Another smash to hit the glossies in recent years is Huishan Zhang. Born in Qingdao, educated at Central Saint Martins, and apprenticed at Dior Couture Atelier, Zhang has graced both the London and Paris runways since launching his eponymous womenswear label in 2012.

And over the last three years Zhang has refined his vision – with stylists and buyers alike sitting up to take notice – you can now find his collection on the racks of luxury department stores including Browns of London and Barneys New York, as well as Chinese fashion powerhouse Joyce stocking his covetably wispy threads in its Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai outposts.

For this season, a blush pink and pastel blue palette emanates tea party-chic, with lace applique, Swarovski embellishment, mix and match separates, and a light helping of feather boa’d fringe for statement-makers. A refreshing take on the East meets West wardrobe.
