Lady of leather, Mary Huang – beloved in Shanghai for her butter-soft and brightly hued bags – is bringing her complete cache of stylish accessories together under one roof for the first time with the opening of a flagship store in hip nabe Jing’An. The small street-front shop, painted a bold shade of buttercup (in reference to the designer’s surname, which is Chinese for ‘yellow’), hardly fits in seamlessly to this leafy stretch of Julu Lu, but then the Sino-Swedish designer’s wares have never been about blending in.
Inside, the walls are festooned with classically shaped, candy-coloured clutches and handbags in vibrant shades from emerald to indigo, and handmade in limited quantities from premium leather and lambskin. But these bags aren’t all about the aesthetics; each Designed by MaryH item is clever enough to please the most functionally minded fashionista with Chinese silk-lined interiors packed with pockets, clip-in cases for extra storage, plus adjustable straps and removable sections for multiway wearability. Also on show are Mary’s latest leather creations, a rapidly growing range of men’s and women’s shoes that deviate from her signature bright colour palette with fun animal prints and gentle pastels. So step into some blue suede slingbacks, pick out an eye-catching purse and throw a tote over your shoulder – for fun, functional fashion MaryH has got it in the bag.
