Design Republic Design Commune
It seems as though leading edge indie architect firm Neri & Hu will not rest until they’ve left a lasting mark on Shanghai’s urban landscape, and they’ve made a good start of it with a portfolio of striking boutique hotels, prestigious restaurant projects (Pollen Street Social, Mercato, and Capo) and, most recently, a jaw-dropping head office and flagship for Camper. Another string to their thickly cast bow is Design Republic Design Commune, located in Shanghai’s buzzing Huangpu, this modern-meets-heritage space serves not only as a flagship for multi-brand furniture retailer Design Republic, but also as a haven for designers, design patrons and consumers to admire, ponder, and exchange ideas.
Occupying the century-old former British Police Headquarters, Neri & Hu have pepped up the rather dilapidated shop row with the insertion of a modern glassy block spanning the age-old red brick façade. The premium modern furniture store carries the design firm’s own designs (think odd-shaped mirrors framed by thick bamboo, freestanding lights, and smooth ceramic pots), as well as a cache of European labels never before available in China like E15, Moooi, Matteograssi, and Tom Dixon. And with the massive space also playing host to a number of other retail concepts (including books, fashion, and flowers), as well as a gallery, boutique event space, café and bar, one thing’s for sure – this is no one-trick pony!
