Spanish Slip-ons

May 13, 2014

Step out of Shanghai’s super malls and off its bustling main roads – much of the city’s most vibrant and culturally exciting vignettes are to be found tucked away down its snug side alleyways. As a paean to these iconic ‘nong-tangs’, innovative and prolific architecture partnership Neri & Hu (a.k.a Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu, also behind The Commune Social and Capo at Rockbund) have conceptualised a flagship store and office for the quirky Spanish shoe brand Camper, meant to serve as a reflection of the city’s diverse urban landscape.

The vast showroom was constructed inside an industrial warehouse for a 'building-within-a-building' vibe, lined with wood and rough grey bricks reclaimed from demolished lane houses, then cut in half by expansive glazed cross-sections, and fitted with Camper-inspired red rubber edging to create a sense of continuity with the street. Meanwhile, lining the bespoke brass shelving are a number of men’s and women’s footwear collaborations, such as laser-cut sandals from Rachel Comey, cutting edge wedges by Romain Kremer (creative director at Thierry Mugler), and Bernhard Willhelm’s colourful selection of funky high-top trainers. These all star alongside Camper’s usual range of buttery soft leather pumps, cork-heeled platforms and other reliably comfy shoes – a great partner for pounding the pavements of Shanghai!
