Herbal Hedonism

Who needs to visit an apothecary when you can sample herbal remedies straight out of a cocktail glass? For an industrial-chic bar that’s suitably sci-fi Shanghai, pull up a counter perch at in/outdoor Botanist.

One of the city’s few non-smoking bars, this shiny new glass, chrome and greenery-clad pad offers an array of herb, spice, fruit and plant-themed cocktails using fresh sprigs such as lemongrass, jasmine, mint, thyme, and sage as well as flowers. Ingredients in this ‘farm-to-bar’ den are sourced from local markets or grown in-house.

Venetian designer Alberto Caiola has incorporated floor-to-ceiling living green walls of aromatic foliage into the decor to engage the senses. Set in the leafy French Concession, Botanist sports a black wood outdoor deck, with lounge-friendly banquettes and poufs, ideal for taking the air. It makes for a natural contrast with the sculptural metal and neon grid suspended from the ceiling, which morphs into low tables, teamed with bent wire chairs, glossy metal side tables and industrial surfaces. Cobalt sofas, permeable metal mesh and dark mirrors add to the seductive clubby feel, as technology meets dance tunes in this futuristic bar.

Order your ‘tails or craft beers at the bar, where backlit jars of verdant infusions catch the eye. Avant-garde lighting continues care of an illuminated polycarbonate wall, allowing you peeks at palms behind. Botanical bliss!
