All that Glitters

April 20, 2015
G9 Shanghai

Soaring skyscrapers and designer-clad denizens all attest to China’s dazzling and unwavering upswing, but few places have captured the country’s astronomic economic ascent as well as G9 Shanghai. Beneath the triple-height ceilings and a running river of light, raw steel and concrete, meet marble and glimmering gold – not unlike stepping into Liberace’s dining room, had he supped in a banquet hall. Oh, and you can dine out on more than just the decor here.

Tucked inside Hong Kong-imported Lane Crawford (the luxe embodiment of Chinese affluenza if there ever was one) G9 Shanghai is no run-of-the-mill restaurant. Once your eyes adjust to the surfeit of stunning design accents, you can begin to take in the space, and boy, what a space it is. Bisected by a 22 metre-long brass banquet table, you’ll soon realise the reason behind all the glitz and glamour – you’re here to eat. Modern Euro-inspired dishes emerge from the kitchen, with artfully plated foie gras, oysters and suckling pig on offer, however the star of the show is the ‘Meteorites’ dessert. White chocolate, dry ice and Jackson Pollock-esque swirls of sauce set to a classical soundtrack – need we say more?
