Lauded in Asia as the first lady of cutting-edge Korean menswear, Wooyoungmi has her eponymous, design-led, five-storey lifestyle showroom for avant-garde menswear in Seoul. But making her international debut is a striped-back, stone wall spot within a historical Le Marais building in Paris. And yet this outpost halfway around the world effortlessly fits into its environs – perhaps because WYM’s designs have long embodied the sought-after, sophisticated Parisian-chic, perfectly balancing casual and contemporary styles with classically masculine aesthetics.
Like the clothes it contains, the three-storey space melds modern minimalism with original design elements, preserving the building’s whitewashed stone walls with sleek slate floors and subdued lighting. The ground and first floors showcase an elegant assemblage of perfectly-fitted floral shirts, angular overcoats and textured blazers in subtle, misty tones, while the basement is given over to Wooyoungmi’s more casual collection of tailored Japanese denim, basic tees and other urbanwear. Gentlemen can sharpen their silhouettes with slim-fit suits, panelled cotton shirts and carefully detailed tops and trousers, then browse selected paintings and abstract artworks, part of an ongoing creative project and partnership with emerging artists. Fashion as art!
