Right Royal Tea

March 09, 2017
Versailles + Ore
It doesn’t get more French than taking high tea in the Palace of Versailles! If, like us, you are beguiled by Gallic style and history, then you’re long overdue an encounter with Paris’s most astonishing heritage gem.

Not only is February one of the best times to visit Versailles, as crowd numbers are down and the beautiful grounds will be engulfed in an air of foggy, icy mystery, but also superchef Alain Ducasse has just unveiled a swellegant new contempo caff-resto in the recently revamped Pavillon Dufour.
Named Ore – meaning mouth in Latin and suggestive of the seductive pleasures of courtly gastronomy – this elegant eatery offers gasp-inducing views of the historic architecture, glanced through full-height shuttered windows. Interiors by Dominique Perrault are super-chic, with curvy armchairs, intimate tables and soave neutral hues. Offering breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea, it serves French classics, snacks and gourmet pastries. Seasonal and delicious, they’re the perfect reward after you’ve toured the regal architecture and palace’s glittering collections.

Luxe’s top tip is tea, dubbed Marie-Antoinette’s Delight (have cake!), with options including ice-creams and sorbets, lime or chocolate soufflés, and Les Versaillaises (pick from passionfruit/pineapple tart, rum savarin, vanilla millefeuille and pistachio-orange blossom religieuse). A hedonistic feast worthy of the Sun King and his queen!
