Spring into Culture

April 14, 2016
Culture Calling… Spring Exhibitions

Banish any lingering winter blues with spring’s sprightly new crop of exhibitions, blooming around Paris this month. There’s no need to accessorise with a jaunty beret and painting palette, though, as you can admire the work of major artists without even lifting a brush.

Big-name shows include L’Atelier en Plein Air: Les Impressionnistes en Normandie (until 25 Jul) at the beautiful Musée Jacquemart-André near the Champs-Elysées. Featuring 50-odd works by Monet, Degas, Renoir and co, it celebrates the Impressionist painters’ love affair with outdoor landscapes or ‘plein-air’ painting, using coastal-cool Normandy as their alfresco ‘studio’.

Must-see Le Douanier Rousseau (until 17 Jul), at Musée d'Orsay, explores the quirky works of Henri Rousseau, famous for his naïve paintings of tropical flora and fauna. Geeky factoid – the self-taught artist was nicknamed Le Douanier (‘the customs officer’) as he worked as a toll collector. This striking trad-modern riverside museum is in a grandiose former railway station opposite Jardin des Tuileries.

For lesser-known gems, seek out photographer Ugo Mulas (until 24 Apr) at Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, who snapped the NYC and Italian art scenes, as well as shutterbugs Helena Almeida: Corpus and François Kollar: Un ouvrier du regard (both until 22 May) at Jeu de Paume. Fascinating mixed-media medley Carambolages (until 4 Jul) is at the Grand Palais, or catch German artist Anselm Kiefer’s last hurrah at the Centre Pompidou, finishing soon on 18 April.
