Whether you’re a nest featherer, vintage bibliophile or a la mode aesthete with a penchant for one-off French fashion, there’s something for everyone to be ‘thankful’ for at Marais concept store Merci. Housed in a former C.19th wallpaper factory, the bright and airy, three-storey showroom heaves with an ever-changing array of antique and boutique homeware, chic furnishings, designer fashion, indulgent Aesop and Annick Goutal beauty products, second-hand books, and not one, but three cafes for that all-important mid-shop flop.
So, where to start? Skip past the mélange of ferns and folding chairs lining the black boulevard Beaumarchais façade to peruse pre-loved tomes in the Used Book Café – best fuel up with a strong café au lait while you’re at it – before charging forth to the chic interiors area, where NLXL wallpaper, industrial ARTECK lighting, Liberty trunks and Merci’s coveted own-brand linens share the spotlight. Abode sorted, now it’s your turn, with men’s and women’s garb from local and international up-and-comers, limited-edition pieces from established names like Alexis Mabille and YSL, plus Merci’s snuggly merino wool basics. Lastly, follow your nose to the in-store florist – or aforementioned beauty bars – for an aromatic or pretty take-home treat, before retiring for a well-earned sup at charcuterie and film spot Cinema Café, or veggie garden courtyard La Cantine. The only hard part – leaving!
