Icons of Modern Art: The Shchukin Collection

Is one of your New Year’s resolutions to prioritise inspiring experiences over stockpiling more stuff? For a stimulating culture hit that ticks all the art and architecture boxes make for Fondation Louis Vuitton, the jaw-dropping contemporary building by Frank Gehry that’s home to always-stellar shows. Set beside the Jardin d’Acclimatation in westside Paris park Bois de Boulogne, its soaring glass sails are impressive enough, but wait until you see what’s inside…

Tipped as the exhibition of the season, Icons of Modern Art: The Shchukin Collection showcases the extraordinary pieces acquired by renowned early C.20th patron and Muscovite industrialist Sergei Shchukin, a visionary Russian collector of French modern art. Little known in the West and broken up in 1948, the collection has never been gathered together again – until now. With help from top Russian galleries – Moscow’s Pushkin Museum and Tretyakov State Gallery, and St Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum – this exhibition reunites 130 of Shchukin’s masterpieces, including Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Modern wonders.

The roll call of French heavyweights includes Braque, Cézanne, Degas, Gauguin, Matisse, Monet, Renoir, Rousseau and Toulouse-Lautrec. Stir in Spanish talent Picasso and Dutch maestro Van Gogh, plus Russian stars from Malevich to Rodchenko, and you’ll have some idea of the show’s ravishing range. Film director Peter Greenaway and Saskia Boddeke have also created a multimedia installation exploring the monumental palace staircase work Shchukin commissioned from Matisse. Not to be missed!
