New York has its fair share of superb scentsmiths, not least Aedes de Venustas and the envelope-pushing CB I Hate Perfume, but stepping into the fragrant fray now is Twisted Lily, the olfactory lovechild of Stamatis Birsimijoglou and Eric Weiser previously responsible for the extensive and easy to use Parfum1.com online store. Located on Brooklyn’s Atlantic Avenue, the pure white-walled, 650-sq ft emporium is a fascinating gambol through a deliciously-curated list of up-comers and under the radar fragrance names with many previously unavailable in the US. But perhaps where the boutique scores most, particularly in comparison to say the large department store or Sephora experience, is the personal touch, where employees are as passionate as they are knowledgeable across all 30 brands.
In an olfactive cloud of goodies (which covers home fragrance, make-up, skin and body care) there are multiple must-tries for both men and women, but leading the pack is local Brooklyn brand D.S. & Durga, whose ‘Boston Ivy’ is a ravishingly green but powdery decoction of cold-pressed lime, hops flower, grass, English ivy and oakmoss, and ‘Burnt Barbershop’ a deeply resinous and smoky blend of lavender, spearmint, tobacco and vanilla. With LUXE favourite Maison Francis Kurkdjian from Paris alongside Tommi Sooni, Montale, Undergreen and Patricia de Nicolai as well as a host of others, Brooklyn never smelt so good.
