SoHo Neighbourhood Guide: SoHo

April 24, 2017
Walk This Way… SoHo

Join our walking tour of this vibey LES hood, with a focus on SoHo’s high-end indie fashion, homewares, and hangouts for mid-retail refuels. Some of Manhattan’s best shopping can be found here, although avoid weekends unless you wish to experience the Midwest!

Start at 285 Lafayette St (cnr Jersey St) at Florentine darling Santa Maria Novella, stocked with elegant eau de cologne, soaps and body booty. Exit, cross Lafayette into Jersey, go left into Crosby St, and on your left is MiN New York at #117, a handsome house of men’s grooming and perfumes. Jill Platner at #113 has sculptural silver body candy, then for edible sweets head right up Prince to the corner of Broadway to deli legend Dean & Deluca.

Refuel then retrace your steps turning right into Crosby to find MZ Wallace at #93 for funky bags; next door is Mud with streamlined, colourful Aussie porcelain tableware for your pad at #91; chic Crosby Street Hotel is at #79 with terrace bar; then cross for the MoMA Design Store on the corner at 81 Spring St for smart gifts. Bistro babe Balthazar is on the opposite corner at #80 (with scrumptious bakery next door). Bound on down Crosby to Saturdays Surf NYC at #31 with espresso, great swim trunks for guys and surf gear; next door is Fellow Barber at #33, handy for gents to grab a trad shave and trim.

Continue over Grand to the next block where you’ll find lovely, ethical womenswear fashion label Maiyet #16, and further at #5 BDDW crafts exquisite contempo American timber furniture, while De Vera at #1 has fascinating religious relics and curios.

Head left onto Howard for Brit Tom Dixon’s contempo lighting and homewares at #19; Reformation offers slick retooled vintage and dresses at #23; Michele Varian at #27 does fab fabrics, wallpaper and ceramics; Sarajo at #31 has antique multi-culti textiles, furny, costumes and jewellery; then finish with a bang with edgy US fash at Opening Ceremony including m/w at #33 (up the red staircase) and w/w at  #35, with own-label and like-minded brands – hipster paradise.

SoHo over it? Gallop back to slink-a-dink Balthazar to rest your hooves. You star!
