The Sunshine State Comes to Brooklyn

The Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club
Always at the keen edge of the latest trend, Brooklyn now boasts a New York City first in the form of The Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club – a 17,000 sq ft Gowanus warehouse retrofitted with 10 regulation-size turquoise shuffleboard courts. Although famously a pastime on the decks of cruise ships or in the sunnier climes of Florida geriatric homes, this archaic game (in which players push weighted pucks, or biscuits, down a narrow court with a broom-shaped paddle, or tang) has been dragged kicking and screaming into the C.21st with a kitsch-cool fitout of vintage pool furniture, stripy cabana nooks, fairylights strung-up overhead, and a roster of killer cocktails named after shuffleboard champions.

Rather than housing a run-of-the-mill kitchen, the space plays host to some of the city’s most sought after food trucks on rotation, such as Luke's Lobster or Morris Grilled Cheese, while classic cocktails include frozen pina coladas, eight craft brews, and a gin, lime, cucumber and coconut concoction that has proved so popular it’s now available on tap. Furthermore, there’s some manner of event every night of the week, including live music, league nights, or even Bingo on Wednesdays. But if the prospect of whacking a biscuit with a tang is still somewhat baffling – fear not – the staff, schooled in shuffleboard sleight of hand, are always there to help. Hup!
