A Romantic Day in NYC

February 14, 2018

As many a Hollywood movie has shown, few cities compete with New York when it comes to old-school romance. From artsy dining, to intimate imbibers and sumptuous spa treats, here’s how to while away a day in The Big Apple à deux.

It being a day of romance, you’ll enjoy a lie-in (natch), but when hunger strikes, shimmy over to The Bar Room at The Modern. This casual-yet-sleek sibling to MoMa’s main restaurant is host to Chef Abram Bissell’s delish Gallic-inflected menu of dishes such as roasted beets with black truffle pistachio vinaigrette and lobster en croûte. Post lunching, take a stroll through the art collections, which currently include special exhibitions by Cathy Wilkes, Naeem Mohaiemen and Tania Bruguera (until 11 March).

Culture kick ticked, head back to the Peninsula Spa for an afternoon of indulgence in the private suite, replete with its own double aromatherapy bath and twin shower. There are several relaxing ‘retreat’ packages designed with couples in mind, while further plush pampering comes in the form of tension relieving foot rituals and side-by-side massages. And relaaaax...

Here’s hoping you’ve worked up an appetite again as next up is dinner at Grand Central Oyster Bar, the NYC institution famed for serving fine bivalves and flip-fresh seafood for more than 100 years. Helmed by Executive Chef Sandy Ingber, the aphrodisiac-heavy menu featuring the likes of Bluepoint oysters with prosecco mignonette and Yuzu caviar, draws the chicerati in from far and wide – ensure you book ahead to join the love in.

There’s no better way to round off a quintessential NY day with a trip to Broadway. Lovebirds will have a myriad of shows to choose from; we’re hankering to see Uma Thurman in The Parisian Woman (on until mid-March), a modern-day tale of marriage, power and politics. Pre-booking seats is essential, but should they all be nabbed before you can say “curtain call’; try tkts for cut-price tickets on the day of the show. As a finale, nip for nightcaps at Salon de Ning; we love the cutely named Ning-groni, a mix of Nolet’s gin, Aperol and basil. Cheers to you two!
