Yankee Dandy Diner

April 23, 2015
The Polo Bar

If you’re scouting about for a high-brow, low-lit escape from the tourist trap that is Midtown Manhattan this spring, look no further than this olde-worlde homage to town-and-country aristocracy – as imagined by billionaire fashion designer, entrepreneur and enigmatic silver fox, Ralph Lauren. Complete with megawatt celebs sporting dazzling white smiles, an overstated sense of occasion and equestrian adornments throughout, The Polo Bar offers smooth, cool, subterranean respite from hoi polloi.

Having booked well in advance, gallop down the stately staircase (tucked in next door to the Polo Ralph Lauren flagship store) into the clubby wood-panelled, cognac-hued dining room and allow one of the impeccably turned-out waiting staff to show you to your leather-clad booth. The menu boasts elevated American comfort classics, such as crab cakes, hamburgers, and dry-aged steaks carved from beef that has been reared, when availability allows, on RL’s Colorado ranch. Don’t miss the corned beef sandwich on marble rye – one of the big man’s own favourites, and with good reason. Plates arrive alongside your picks from a big-hitting wine list, time-honoured cocktails and RL’s signature coffee blend. And keep those peepers peeled for a smattering of NYC glitterati, plus the odd cameo from the owner himself. Yankee doodle dandy, indeed!
