New York’s Best Outdoor Weekend Markets
Summer has well and truly rolled around and the city’s outdoor markets are back in business – so on the next sunny weekend why not don your biggest shades, slip into something chic, and take to the street fairs and fleas for all the fabulous food and vintage finds New York City affords.
It endured the particularly long winter by hibernating indoors, but the beloved Brooklyn Flea is back to basking in the sun with weekend locations in Fort Greene and Williamsburg, where more than 150 vendors are selling antiques, vintage clothing, jewellery, handmade homewares and bric-a-brac. Try Savannah Hope Vintage for chic salvaged furniture, Jessica DeCarlo for earthy gems and jewels, and Alyssa Ettinger for handcrafted clay creations.
The Brooklyn Flea’s sister food market Smorgasburg has also returned much to the delight of foodies citywide, with more than 75 hunger-sating stalls prepped and ready to feed. Schedule a Sunday session at the Brooklyn Bridge Park location, where you can indulge in Buttermilk Channel’s chicken n’ cheddar waffles while you take in signature views of the Manhattan skyline.
In Downtown Manhattan, discover the Lower East Side’s Hester Street Fair, where highlights include boho threads from wanderlust-inducing boutique Nomad, unique printed scarves at UURMI, and bronze charms by Cara Cruz.
Meanwhile, locavores and organic eaters will congregate at epicurean institution Union Square Greenmarket. Running since 1976, this famed farmers market has the finest local and seasonal produce straight from the patch and paddock, plus artisanal breads, spreads and cheeses.
