The Monarch Room & Gilded Lily

Chelsea late nighter the Gilded Lily has been a favourite hang of New York’s style set since opening at the beginning of this year, but – perhaps inspired by the phrase the moniker draws from – owners Eric Marx and Lisle Richards were always eager to add an extra layer of decadent adornment to their regal imbiber. Thus, above the bar guests will spy The Monarch Room, a chic American brasserie melding floor to soaring ceiling polished concrete, Art Deco pendant lights, lush leather booth seats and industrial accents galore in a 180-seat, 1930s warehouse setting.

Chef Michael Citarella’s menu makes use of seasonal market ingredients in sharable starters like carrot toast with pea tendrils, and fried hen of the woods with buttermilk mushrooms, while the raw bar overflows with oysters, fluke crudo and crab salad. Meaty mains include dryaged strip steak, paprika pork shoulder, and a mixed grill of Millbrook venison, house-made sausage and duck legs. No to be outdone by her showy downstairs sister, TMR also has signature libations like the Silver Fox (oat whiskey, Drambuie and apricot liqueur) and the floral Anne Boleyn (Beefeater gin, Lillet Rosé, hibiscus syrup and lavender bitters). Then once dinner’s done, head down to the Lily for chandelier-lit shimmying and a well-deserved glass of Dom. Golden.
