Jack's Wife Freda
Do you know Jack’s Wife Freda? Well, just about every New Yorker worth their Green Shakshuka eggs is familiar with this honest-to-goodness all day diner – or at least, they’ve tried to be.
The problem is that since opening three years ago the casj-cosy Soho bistro has been so packed out with eager foodies, it’s become harder to secure a table than to herd a brood of bearded hipsters.
However, the odds of snagging a perch at this hub and wife-run caff have now significantly improved with the opening of a new Jack’s Wife Freda outpost in the West Village.
Slightly larger than its sibling, the recently unveiled addition keeps the same laid-back vibe with simple leather banquettes, two-tops and a long marble bar; while the menu looks much the same too – the Eggs Benny with smoked salmon and beet hollandaise has made it across, as have the peri-peri duck wings and skirt steak sandwich.
Come nightfall expect boozy bites like the Bloody Mary mussels, and swap joe for hootch with their signature cocktails and by-the-glass wines. Just arrive early, or saucy Freda may still keep you waiting.
