Hack the Met @ The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the country's largest art museum, with its permanent collection boasting more than two million works, and heaving with some of the most significant works of art in the world. So naturally, tackling such a mecca of masterpieces can be a daunting task and, some might even venture, dull! Well, that is exactly the assumption that Nick Gray, founder of alternative tour guide group Hack the Met, is striving to change. Although not affiliated with the museum, Gray offers entertaining jaunts through the Met’s hallowed halls with a pointed emphasis on some of the gallery’s lesser-known, but nonetheless interesting works of art.

Only taking place on Friday and Saturday nights, there are but two rules to qualify for a Hack The Met tour: wear something fabulous, and bring a small flask of your favourite poison... which should give you some clue as to what kind of antics will ensue. In a game akin to ‘The Price Is Right’, guests are often challenged to select the most valuable pieces of art, or simply reinvent their favourite statue out of Play-Doh. With a waiting list that’s purportedly in the thousands, don’t fret if you aren’t invited to be a part of Gray’s VIP evening tours – his other tour company Museum Hack holds regular weekday tours helmed by knowledgeable native New Yorkers. Met-iculous!
