Wham, Bam, Clam!

The Clam
Just a hop and a skip along from fusion diner Piora sits The Clam, an elegant little West Village bolthole from chef Mike Price (Market Table) and partner Joey Campanaro (The Little Owl). Seafood is the order of the day at this 50-seat neighbourhood restaurant showcasing an Atlantic seaboard and market-driven, seasonal produce, but as the name suggests, this chef has a particular weakness for one mighty mollusc in particular… The Clam’s menu unabashedly extolls the unsung virtues of its briney little namesake – steamed, raw, baked, rolled, or chowdered – you name it, he’s shucked it.

Top neck clams come thick and fast in tangles of tangy tomato spaghetti laced with chili flakes and chopped surf; steamed littlenecks arrive nestled in their shells in an aromatic broth; cherrystone clams are stuffed and baked with pancetta, bread crumbs, and red pepper; and not to be missed is the sinful clam dip with a creamy Worcestershire and cayenne sour cream, plus a side of spiced potato chips. Raw oysters, king crab claws and roasted duck also feature but if you’re seafood averse, then the lovely Clam is almost certainly not for you. And as expected, David Giuliano’s cocktails like the Yuzu Swizzle (vodka, pomegranate, yuzu and mint) boast an unmistakably fruity-fresh tang that perfectly complements this flavoursome little shell.
