From Songwriter to Singer

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical tells a story, not of the singer-songwriter’s life as a chart-topping solo artist who found worldwide fame with her seminal album Tapestry, but of the remarkable rise of Carole Klein, a young, talented and resilient Jewish girl from Brooklyn who married fellow songwriter Gerry Goffin as a teenager and had her first number 1 hit (Will You Love Me Tomorrow) as a songwriter for The Shirelles at the tender age of 18. Her place in the record business was hard-earned and by the time she reached her twenties, she was writing hits for the biggest acts in rock n' roll.

The story chronicled by this hit Broadway show (already recipient to stellar reviews) suggests that it was only when her personal life began to crack that King (née Klein) found her true voice and became one of the most successful solo acts in pop music history. The cast, including Tony award-nominee Jessie Mueller in the title role, Jake Epstein as her then husband, and Anika Larsen as Cynthia Weil (one of King’s fellow writers and friends), performs playwright Douglas McGrath’s script under the direction of Marc Bruni. With over 15 of King’s beloved tunes like (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, So Far Away, and You’ve Got a Friend weaved into the plot, you’re sure to get a wonderfully musical blast from the past.
