New York’s Best Blooms
Fancy seeing the Big Apple in bloom? New York may be famous for striking snowscapes and sun-baked summers, but it’s hard to beat the city in April when it gets fresh (ooh, matron!).
There’s something in the air this spring… the fragrant allure of the Orchid Show at New York Botanical Garden’s Enid A. Haupt Observatory (until 17 Apr), featuring thousands of exotic species. ‘Orchidelirium’ is this year’s theme, recalling the C.19th orchid craze. Ogle beautiful specimens and enjoy dance performances, flower-inspired films, poetry readings, tours, talks, orchid-care demos and shopping opps. Special Orchid Evenings (6.30-9.30pm) offer fertile socialising. Tickets include a Ginger Vanilla Fusion cocktail, with DJs, dancers and foodie treats bringing the lush Conservatories to life.
Then switch off your lights, unplug your gadgets and get out into the great green for Earth Day (Fri, 22 Apr) with picnics and high jinx in our favourites: Central Park, The High Line and Brooklyn Bridge Park. A Union Square warm-up event (noon-7pm, 17 Apr) gathers green campaigners with live performances and kids’ activities, plugging the #carfreenyc initiative. You can also walk the Earth Day 5K Green Tour (22 Apr), taking in underground park the Lowline and natural food cooking school.
Finally, sample the Sakura Matsuri: Cherry Blossom Festival at Brooklyn Botanic Garden (30 Apr-1 May), with 60 events and performances celebrating Japanese culture. Flower power!
