Gentlemen's Go-To

January 03, 2013
Barneys Relaunches Basco

Barneys New York is certainly a big city staple that has, since its inception in 1923, been ground zero for style savants in search of high-end and luxury designer wear. Although the Madison Avenue flagship is today known for its red awnings, inventive window displays and haute fashion, thirty years ago it was Barneys own private label Basco (short for Barneys American Sportswear Company) that had gentlemen filing in the door. A Lance Keresh-designed standout collection of stylish, sporty basics through the 80s until it folded in the mid 90s, Basco was officially re-launched by the men’s team last summer, with the goal of outfitting the modern ‘All-American’ man in pieces of classic tailoring and impeccable style.

The updated Basco line continues to focus on utilitarian, quality product: all clothing is made in Italy from European or Japanese fabric, while leather accessories like bags and belts are made in the USA in collaboration with Tennessee artisan Emil Erwin. This winter, you’ll find smart, off-duty wear like crewneck sweaters and striped dress shirts alongside twill topcoats and flannel flight bomber jackets, plus handsome brushed Gabardine or felt utility trousers. If you remember Basco from a bygone era, or even if you don’t, one thing we can all agree on – hopefully this time it’s here to stay!
