Spring has sprung in the Big Apple, bringing sun and golden shopping opps to town. NY is known for dreamy department stores, from Macy’s to Bergdorf Goodman, Century 21, Saks Fifth Avenue, Henri Bendel and Bloomingdale’s. It’s worth planning a trip around them, or just dropping an afternoon snapping up styley bargains.
Happy days then, now that luxury retailer Barneys, the edgiest of NYC’s department stores, has unveiled its swish, brick-lined new Chelsea flagship on the same block where it opened its first store in 1923. The wow-worthy 58,000-sq-ft retail palace spans five floors, resplendent with pretty things, from men’s and women’s RWT to shoes, accessories and cosmetics.
On-trend add-ons include male grooming service The Blind Barber for straight-razor shaves, plus iconic restaurant Freds Downtown for snax (hello famous French fries!). Lunch and weekend brunch are open now, with a dinner and cocktail service to come. Nostalgics will love the return to Barneys’ original, heritage stamping-ground, but this is definitely a switched-on store for the 21st century.
Snap up a Saint Laurent clutch bag, an Ulla Johnson ombré pleated dress or Gabriella Hurst chiffon blouse. Need a bit of a hand? Personal shoppers can help guide you through the store, selecting new-season pieces to suit you or great gifts. The fit-out features lashings of marble, gold and a dramatic white spiral staircase swirling towards the heavens. Up, up and away!
