New York City Ballet
New York City Ballet’s alluring autumn calendar has just been unveiled, and what a corker! Dance devotees are in for a treat with the Fall 2016 season set to include a mix of new and classic works by both homegrown and international talents.
An annual celebration of ballet and fashion, the fabulous Fall Gala kick starts the month-long programme, featuring four pithy world premieres. Expect ballets by NYCB’s newest female principal dancer Lauren Lovette, Colombian-Belgian choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, resident choreographer/soloist Justin Peck (creating an intimate piece for two), and Corps de Ballet member Peter Walker (who translates his choreographic talents from social media videos to stage). Each dance-maker collaborates with a different designer – Narciso Rodriguez, Rosie Assoulin, Dries Van Noten and Jason Wu – to craft couture costumes that’ll have fashionistas in a flap.
Company co-founder/artistic director George Balanchine, the late father of American ballet, is the focus of 14 works, including the full-length Jewels (inspired by a visit to luxe jewellers Van Cleef & Arpels and its dazzling precious stones), faves Firebird and Serenade, and two programmes of shorter pieces (his groundbreaking Black & White Stravinsky series, showcasing streamlined movement and music, and three ballets inspired by Viennese composers from Mozart to Strauss).
Glass Pieces, Jerome Robbins’ collaboration with composer Philip Glass, is another must-see in the American Music programme, highlighting work by NYCB patriarchs. Pointe, pirouette, and plié your way to the David H Koch Theater quicksticks!
