How To Do The US Open In Style

August 17, 2017
US Open

New York’s most popular sporting event bounces into town for two weeks on 28 August and whether you have tickets, want to get tickets, or simply prefer to soak up the sporting atmos from the comfort of a breezy rooftop bar, here’s the lowdown on how to do the US Open in Style.

Got Tickets

The US Open is a star-studded affair, so as well as slapping on the sunblock, sunhat and oversized sunnies, slip into your breeziest and best garden party-style ensemble. Rather unsurprisingly, parking is tricky and you’ve got a snowball’s chance in hell of getting an Uber post-match, so why not book a car for drop-off and collection, allowing you to hit the Moët & Chandon bar with abandon.

On your way over, sling by Toby’s Estate, an airy, Aussie-import cafe cupping only the most precise espresso shot to get you gee’d up for the day ahead. Après-match, make the most of being off-island (and avoid the inevitable Brooklyn Bridge jam) by sampling the delights of bustling, boho, so-now enclave Williamsburg. We are loving French Quarter throwback Maison Premiere, with its stellar seafood plates, just-shucked oysters and absinthe cocktails, all best enjoyed in the dreamy garden out back.

Want To Get Tickets

As long as you avoid heaving Labor Day Weekend (2-3 Sep), it’s possible to try your luck on the morning of your preferred match and queue up for a grounds pass or resale seat at the box office, but only a few tickets are released on the day itself. Better yet, get your tickets in advance online (or even the night before) via the Ticketmaster Exchange, where hundreds of billet-holders trade in their seats on a daily basis.

With some of the stadiums seating over 20,000 fans, Federer’s floppy mop may be but flicker on the horizon, so flex the AmEx on a courtside Ashe seat for a day session (preferably during the second week) and you’re guaranteed to not only see a Top 10 player live, but to also rub shoulders with Anna, Bradley, Leonardo and co. Our hands-down fave deal is a full pass (starting at around $2k) which allows you no-holds-barred access to all the games, plus some pretty sweet amenities like a personal concierge.

Admire From Afar

If crowds and 84°F heat are not your thing, you can still stay in Manhattan and soak up some of that ace sporting atmos. Rave-busy, 15,000-sqft foodie emporium Gotham West Market is host to two large screens providing coverage throughout the tournament, while you indulge in nibbles from city-renowned noodles (Ivan Ramen Slurp Shop) to tasty tapas (El Colmado). Or, pretty rooftop kittie Salvation Taco will be rolling out a massive projector for the finals, perfectly paired with Mexican finger food and ice-cold cervezas. Game, set and match.
