New York’s Best Alfresco Restaurants & Bars

July 15, 2017
New York’s Best Alfresco Restaurants & Bars

If you thought New York in springtime was bloomin’ marvellous, prepare to be spoiled silly as summer sprinkles its plentiful charms across the city. And as the mercury rises, so too do the crowds vying for sips n’ sups in the sunshine. From breezy rooftop bars to parkside palate-tinglers, LUXE rounds up the hottest alfresco hangouts in Manhattan.

What: The Pavilion
Best For: Family frolics

If you’ve got the little wrigglers in tow, treat them to lunch at this delightful colonnaded, open-air brasserie set against the lush backdrop of Union Square Park. Not only can you enjoy verdant aspects as you dine on the leafy terrace, sprogs will squeal with glee for The Pavilion’s signature, sought-after hotcakes baked in a rainbow of fun hues.

What: Gallow Green
Best For: A discreet tryst

Looking to up the romance ante? Steal away to this knee-weakening rooftop aerie in buzzy Chelsea. Styled like an abandoned Scottish train station, engulfed by an enchanting overgrown garden, Gallow Green boasts dreamy, peek-a-boo vantages across the city and a stellar menu of punch bowls and craft cocktails (we’ll be returning for the rum, turmeric-chai golden milk and fresh citrus Golden Child).

What: Santina
Best For: People-watching

After a scenic amble along viewtiful, green, riverside promenade The Highline, totter down to this brightly coloured boite plating up flip-fresh seafood and Med-inspired eats. The design-led dining room is accented with museum-worthy Murano chandeliers, but for a buzzy slice of the action, pull up a pew on the people-watching porch to soak up the street-mos.

What: Grand Banks
Best For: Urban escape

If summer in the city’s got you feeling more ick than slick, escape the concrete jungle by hopping aboard historic wooden schooner Grand Banks for a breezy evening on the Hudson River. The swoony outlook is equalled only by the succulent seafood small plates – from fresh-shucked sustainable Long Island oysters and lobster rolls to ceviche and fluke crudo – paired with signature sailor-worthy beverages. Prepare to queue!

What: Salon de Ning
Best For: UES glamour

Sure, Manhattan boasts more rooftop bars than you can shake a swizzle stick at, but long-standing LUXE fave Salon de Ning is hands-down one of the best, offering twinkly 5th Avenue penthouse panoramas, Sino snacks and an ace lineup of Sino-inspired libations (we adore the killer lychee martini). Smart Upper East Side crowd, so gussy up glam.
