Who doesn’t love luxe luggage in tactile leathers? To make a statement on your next vacay, pair your trip to the awesome Met Breuer with a peek in chic French travel trunk label Moynat’s first ever Big Apple store next door.
Instantly seductive, the oak-paneled space is in the former Whitney brownstones, a revived townhouse with interiors influenced by the 1849-founded brand's iconic domed trunks. Cathedral-like arched ceilings extend over two levels, with clean-lined, curvy metal creating a trunk-like frame. A glass column, surrounded by a spiral staircase, leads from the basement to the top, displaying vintage trunks that form the heritage of Paris’ oldest trunk-maker. Amber touches, spotted on handrails, lacquered panels and rugs, also pick up on indulgent luggage details.
Pastel-hued weekender bags, from pink to sky-blue, will tempt you to whisk them away on a mini-break. Hip guys and gals should also seek out Pharrell Williams’ new line of train-inspired totes and accessories, part of his ongoing ‘PW4’ collection. Store exclusives include Quattro bags with a trompe l’oeil tear-out motif, devised by Moynat creative director Ramesh Nair with NY artist Daniel Arsham.
A private basement salon beckons for bespoke commissions, with custom work including lettering, illustrations, personalised colours, hand-stamping and painting. Sip tea in a sinuous armchair while you admire the old photo of Moynat’s original Parisian store. Now that’s how to travel in style!
