The Producers Opens in Manila

December 05, 2013

The Producers

One of the most critically acclaimed musicals in history, Mel Brooks’ The Producers first opened on New York City’s Broadway in 2001, going on to wow audiences and win a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards in that year alone. Based originally on the 1968 film of the same name (also directed by Mel Brooks), The Producers continued to make history over the next decade, touring global theatres including a two year run in London, before arriving at long last at Makati’s Onstage in Manila last month.

Directed by Jaime del Mundo (most recently behind The Bluebird of Happiness and Mind’s Eye), the production features stars of the Philippine Repertory including Topper Fabregas, Carlo Orosa and Robie Zialcita, performing the story now so beloved by audiences the world over. The comedic tale follows struggling Broadway producer Max Bialystock, who alongside fellow producer Leo Bloom aims to give New York the ‘worst musical’ it has ever seen, by choosing former Nazi stormtrooper Franz Liebkind’s script and tapping, flamboyant Roger De Bris to direct it – until, of course, in an ironic twist of fate the show becomes a runaway success. Performed with Brooks’ original music and Susan Stroman’s original choreography, the Manila iteration of The Producers is already off to a smashing start – and is only on stage until December 15th.
