Philippines' Pan-Asian Plates

August 06, 2014

Your Local

Imagine a Manila speakeasy, except substitute cocktails with pan-Asian plates, and you’ve got Your Local, a hidden hideaway from chefs Denny Antonino and Nicco Santos, enticing foodies to the sleepy Legaspi Village district with its flavour-packed pan-Asian fusion menu. It’s got the requisite inconspicuous signage, unmarked double doors, and will prove a bit of a task to find, but your efforts will be kindly rewarded once you set foot inside.

Pull up a pew, order up a refreshing drink (try the heat-beating homemade strawberry lemonade), and scan the restaurant’s industrial space, ambiently melding together tungsten light bulbs in metal cages descending from the ceiling, white bevelled New York City subway wall tiles, and rough wooden floor panelling. Then get acquainted with the menu, boasting standouts such as beef rendang buns with pickled cucumber and smoked aioli encased in crispy-fried mantou buns, torch-fired Norwegian smoked salmon on a blanket of shiitake black rice, and dark chocolate and earl grey cheesecake-flavoured ice cream topped with black sesame paste and milk crumbs. Clandestine crowd-pleaser!
