A Gourmet Gathering

June 02, 2015
Salcedo Market

If you thought Makati was all about gleaming office blocks, hi-so malls and scurrying 9-5ers, head to leafy, sun-dappled Jaime Velasquez Park on a Saturday morning and you’ll be in for an artisanal surprise.

This postage stamp-sized, tree-lined parking lot, slap-bang in the centre of Manila’s business district (but a skip from The Peninsula), is host to the weekly Salcedo Market; an epicurean smorgasbord of fresh produce, homemade offerings and gastronomic treats that will have you loosening your belt faster than you can say ‘blueberry pie’.

Over 100 vendors congregate here for what is the largest and most popular foodie market in the city, attracting throngs of in-the-know Makati-ites. Join them to browse fresh fruit, veg and deli items from sustainability-inclined producers, or… who are we trying to kid – you’re here to eat.

So don your fanciest stretchy pants, skip breakfast and graze your way through a global offering that includes fresh pancakes and galettes by Gigi La Crepe, sweet Turkish baklava by Anatolia Cuisine, and the enduringly popular Taqueria Mia’s burritos.

Fit to burst? Fret not. Take-away is an easy option, which is also what makes Salcedo the perfect one-stop ‘shop’ for edible souvenirs, gifts or simply your next meal. Tuck in!
