Local Hero

August 03, 2015

What’s in a name? Well in straight-talking Manila a restaurant’s moniker often more than hints at what you can expect inside. Take, for example, steak-centric Prime 101 or Le Petit Soufflé (no points for guessing their speciality). And now in the same call-it-like-it-is vein comes Locavore, a new Kapitolyo kitchen that champions local recipes and produce.

Venture beyond the bamboo facade and you’ll find a relaxed industri-cool setting wrapped in matte-finish concrete, cushy banquettes and a long bottle-lined bar. Slink straight over to the latter where the regional repertoire begins with Pinoy-inspired cocktails crafted from house-infused spirits and organically grown ingreds, such as Bukidnon pineapple and Batangas dalandan, as well as boutique Manila-made pale ales and guyabano wines.

Sips sorted, nab a table for chef Mikel Zaguirre’s vast selection of Filipino comfort fare, cleverly executed with a touch of French flair – think kare-kare wings, fluffy liempo pork buns sided by a coriander vinaigrette, and sizzling sinigang swimming in sour sampaloc and garlic gravy.

Just don’t be too loca-voracious, you won’t want to miss the standout dessert of turon flan spring rolls drizzled in a delicious dulce de leche sauce. Sustainable eating at its lip-smacking best.
