Vreeland Uncovered

March 13, 2014

Full Gallop

Anyone familiar with the iconic figure that is Diana Vreeland would probably agree that ‘Full Gallop’ might just be an understatement when used in the context of the fashion doyenne’s life journey. Nevertheless, this Mary Louise Wilson and Mark Hampton-written, one-woman play takes the phrase as its title, and though it’s true that the former US Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue editor was (and remains) a larger-than-life force to be reckoned with in global fashion history, the play itself centres on a transitional period of Vreeland’s life, after she was fired from Vogue in 1971 and looking to take that all-important next step.
Starring one of the Philippines’ most prolific and revered stage and film actresses, Cherie Gil, in the lead role, ‘Full Gallop’ explores Vreeland’s return from Europe following a self-imposed post-Vogue exile, when she sought to throw a dinner party in the hopes of convincing a guest to fund her next magazine venture. Instead, Vreeland is persuaded to take up a post at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, where she would of course go on to establish the annual galas and exhibitions still wowing the fashion cognoscenti today. Bold, colourful, stylish, and original… just like the woman herself!
