Filipino Contemporary Art Focus
With the Philippines’ recently and intensely blossoming art-scape has come a barrage of galleries both trailblazing and yawn-inspiring. With so many destinations it’s hard to sort the wheat from the chaff, but luckily we’ve gone and done that for you – read on to discover the LUXE picks for leaders of the Metro Manila Contemporary Art pack.
Established in 1975, Galleria Duemila is the country’s oldest running commercial art gallery, so naturally its reputation, expertise and artists are of the highest order. Previous exhibitors have included Benedicto Cabrera, Pacita Abad and Betsy Westendorp, and most recently Duddley Diaz with his poetic sculptures of mythical characters in alabaster and ash wood. Another favourite among collectors is Hiraya, where since 1980 the intimate space has been adorned with a revolving mix of painters and styles including abstracts by Norberto Carating, Julio Jose Austria’s surrealistic works, and photo realistic paintings by Randalf Dilla. Last but certainly not least is the Blanc Group, with its three locations – Blanc Gallery, Blanc Compound and Blanc Peninsula, the latter established in 2010 in the Peninsula’s very own shopping arcade, and featuring pieces by up-and-coming and established contemporaries including Isa Lorenzo, Rachel Rillo and Eugene Jarc.
