Music Most Merry

The Peninsula Christmas Concert

It’s always nice to find something special underneath the fairy-lit tree on Christmas Day, but even better than receiving is giving, especially to those who need it more than you. And The Peninsula makes embracing the true charitable spirit of the season even easier with their annual, orchestral benefit concert, which fetes its 32nd edition this December.

It was back in 1979 that, in response to a fateful storm, The Peninsula opened its lobby to the Manila Symphony Orchestra, whose scheduled outdoor performance would otherwise have been cancelled. This kindly gesture led to the first official performance in 1982 and, since then, the joyous event has become a beloved part of both the hotel and the city’s holiday calendars.

The 2015 incarnation will see soprano superstar Rachelle Gerodias joined by tenacious tenor Park Byong and the University of Santo Tomas Singers, alongside the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra and returning guest conductor Maestro Ruggero Barbieri. And on the score sheet? What else but a medley of toe-tapping Yuletide carols and stirring operatic classics.

As if that weren’t already music to concert-goers ears, The Peninsula has pledged to donate 25% of the proceeds to charities supporting families and communities affected by the devastating Super Typhoons Haiyan and Yolanda. We’ll gladly give a Christmas cheer to that!
