Although Carven has been defining French fashion since the implausibly petite Carmen de Tommaso first set pencil to paper in 1945 to design elegant clothing for the smaller ‘moiselle, like many labels of old, it had struggled to keep up with the modern-day woman’s wants and needs. So it was in 2006 that the iconic fashion house brought on board creative director Guillaume Henry, who has since re-energised the brand, winning over a fresh generation of stylesetting fans including Alexa Chung and Emma Stone, and unveiling a slew of new stores worldwide.
Now Filipino fans need not go all the way to Paris to get their French-manicured mitts on Carven’s full range of sophisticated ready-to-wear creations as the label’s latest boutique, and first standalone in Manila, has just opened at the Shangri-La Plaza. The pristine white-walled and timber-floored store carries a cute edit in petite pieces, plus their signature removable collars and colourful bow-backed slingback heels. Heading into summer expect the racks and shelves to be stocked with embroidered floral dresses, striped cotton cardigans and dainty French-made ballet flats, plus plenty of coloured camo and pretty pastel gingham print on everything from pumps to mini backpacks. Mod messieurs won’t miss out either with a tight edit in contrast collar shirts, stylish sneakers and printed polo tees. Chic!
