Asia’s 50 Best Bars

Narrowing down the world’s top sip spots is a tough gig, but someone’s got to do it. With this in mind, the generous folks over at the World’s 50 Best Bars have taken it upon themselves to hone a shortlist for Asia. Bravo! We don’t expect you to work your way through all 50 of them, but do yourself a favour and check out the daring duo that made the cut in Manila.

First, hightail it to The Curator (#16) where technique is always top priority. Hidden in an intimate concrete and wood-framed boite behind Cyrano Wine Bar, it really knows its drops, whether that be roasted fresh-ground coffee by day or carefully concocted craft cocktails by night. Using only the finest ingredients, homemade bitters and small-batch spirits, global mixologists make regular guest appearances. Recent stars at the bar include Charlie Ainsbury from Sydney’s This Must Be The Place and Jeff Bell of New York’s PDT (Please Don’t Tell).

Prohibition-style speakeasies have long been in vogue, but ABV (#14), or Alcohol By Volume, hides a ‘20s throwback drinking den behind a jaunty burger bar on Makati’s Jupiter Street. Pull up a stool at the copper-topped bar in this brick-and-wood space to order classics with signature twists from the savvy bar staff. It also boasts the largest absinthe collection in town, if you fancy a trippy encounter with the Green Fairy…
