With 100 Revolving Restaurant, Black Sheep and Le Jardin all recently debuting in Manila’s glittering skyscrapers, it seems that local restaurateurs are literally reaching for the stars to set themselves apart from the burgeoning pack. The latest offering to aim sky-high is glamourous 71 Gramercy, the new restaurant-cum-nightclub where the city’s movers and shakers have been nigh on stampeding to sample celeb chef Carlo Miguel’s (of BESO Cucina Vinoteka fame) global menu. Modelled on a New York City lounge, 71’s space is gussied up in true Deco-tinged Gotham style, with leather Chesterfields, sleek dark wooden flooring and majestic high ceilings.
Try to book a perch by the floor-to-ceiling windows for a side of showstopping views to compliment Miguel’s reinterpreted classics, like local Filipino favourite sisig (traditionally sautéed pork) here updated with duck confit, foie gras, garlic risotto and calamondin-flavoured foam; stuffed chicken ballotine on a bed of rich truffle risotto; and a feather-light pavlova drenched in a passionfruit nectar and mango flesh. Once dinner’s done, skip over for pricey bottle service and shimmying in the adjoining club, or head on up to the dizzying 72/F rooftop, where sweeping vistas and precision classic cocktails are yours for the taking. Suit up – and don’t look down!
