A Numbers Game

September 12, 2016

In search of somewhere to rock that top knot? Ready to debut your latest tatt? Look no further than Manila, son – a city that continues to carve out its niche as Asia’s grit-cool capital. Case in point: achingly hip 12/10, an izakaya concept from the team behind (equally hip) The Girl + The Bull.

The second brainchild of stylish power duo Thea de Rivera and Gab Bustos, the name itself (a reference to their anniversary date, bless) is rather less cool than the concept, but the sappy premise soon evaporates upon entering its modern, all-white gallery-cum-warehouse space, with carefully curated contempo artworks delivering a welcome pop of colour.

‘Sips before snacks’ is the name of the game here, and the handsome young bar staff will whip up their own exquisite take on classic cocktails, like the Negroni or whiskey sour, using fine, small-batch, imported spirits and tinctures. But not unlike the younger, hipper brother of Mecha Uma, 12/10 takes aim at the ever-popular Japanese small plate concept, allowing diners to customise their own degustation with their drinks.

Nibbles not to be missed include the raw tuna salad (with kyuri cucumber, chopped nori, shichimi and yuzu kosho), the Korean fried chicken (with charred eggplant, gochujang, sesame, shiso and lime), the mackerel ceviche (with sriracha, coconut, coriander oil and radish), and the toro onigiri (with seaweed-wrapped rice, tuna, foie gras, and spicy mayo). Artsy crowd to boot, so kit up cool.
