Christie’s Opens Asian Gallery

April 11, 2014
The James Christie Room

If there was any doubt that Hong Kong is Asia’s rising art capital, the official launch of Art Basel in Hong Kong last year put those uncertainties to bed – and a continuing testament to the city’s status as cultural hub at the confluence of East and West is the arrival of The James Christie Room, the first proper branded space from the world’s largest auction house, Christie’s. A state-of-the-art multi purpose gallery (and the first in Asia) named for the house founder, the space opened in February with a slated aim to host curated exhibitions, educational forums, charity events, private sales and special auctions.

Its inaugural ‘Best of the Best’ exhibit saw a hand-picked collection of pieces from forthcoming Christie’s auctions around the world, with highlights including works from Asian artists Chu The-Chun and Zeng Fanzhi, and Western big-hitters like Claude Monet and Andy Warhol. Now the auction house prepares for its upcoming sale period in May, specialising in Asian C.20th contemporary art, Chinese ceramics, jewellery and jadeite, watches and fine wine – but eager art-lovers will be glad to know that with the arrival of this newly-opened gallery and showroom, viewings can easily be arranged.
