Forget Ikea – Hong Kong’s hip homemakers now have a new concept to turn to for interior inspiration. Porro, the Italian furniture brand founded in 1925 by brothers Giulio and Stefano Porro, has just opened its first showroom in Asia Pacific, bringing the brand’s signature sophisticated design this side of the Atlantic. In a bi-level, 700 sqm Happy Valley space, Porro HK is sleekly outfitted with themed rooms including four living, three dining, and two bedrooms, as well as the all-important wardrobe.
The colour palette speaks mainly to neutral hues like grey walls, wood floors, and monochrome shelving, brightness comes in the form of greenery and the odd pop of mustard yellow and amaranth red, and the reigning philosophy of ‘simplicity above all’ rings clear and true. Although our visit left us wanting to dress our home in the entire catalogue, top nest-feathering picks include the Piero Lissoni-designed Shin bed, a minimalist but sumptuous piece with a sturdy ‘stained ash’ frame and leather cushion headboard; and the Gentle chair, the German Design Council award-winning piece by the Swedish collective Front, an ultra pared-back but surprisingly comfortable leather-backed chair just perfect for the dining table. Italian simplicity done best!
