Old tales of rags to riches may seem like the stuff of Dickens, but during Britain’s burgeoning industrial era it wasn’t entirely unusual for people of lowly beginnings to find footing in the upper echelons of society (of which Dickens himself was an example!). Take the story of humble Cornish barber William Penhaligon who, by the end of his career, had become court perfumer to Queen Victoria and had established an esteemed parfumerie on London’s Jermyn Street. Today, the revered Penhaligon’s has expanded its reach to cities as far afield as Chicago, Tokyo, Bangkok and now – over 140 years since the debut of its first brick and mortar shop – Hong Kong.
With over 30 his-and-hers fragrances to choose from – like the new Iris Prima, a medley of vanilla, jasmine sambac and bergamot, or the Hammam Bouquet, a mix of lavender, cedarwood and amber – it’s with some relief you’ll find in-store scent consultants to lend a hand (or rather a nose), and a Scent Profiling Room at the back to discover the perfume that suits you best. In addition to Penhaligon’s line of heritage scents, the new flagship also sells wares ranging from fragrant soaps, bath oils, and talcum powders, to men’s shaving sets, and even exquisitely perfumed candles. Heaven scent, darling!
