When it comes to holiday souvenirs, it’s easy to snap up food (those dried mangoes you gobble in minutes) and ethnic antiques (which may look weird back home). But for an enduring Hong Kong keepsake, why not treat yourself to some modern artwork, with this month’s respected friendly-on-the-wallet art fair?
Helping culture vultures of every budget buy contemporary art, photography and sculpture, the Affordable Art Fair is a dynamic, vibrant who’s who of the young art world. Held at Wan Chai’s Convention and Exhibition Centre from 19 to 21 May, it includes work by more than 1,000 artists to browse and buy.
Up for grabs are ink paintings, abstract canvases, and editioned prints, with global galleries hailing from Australia, Argentina, Canada, France, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, Spain, the UK and USA. Closer to home, Asian galleries exhibiting are drawn from Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, and Thailand, as well as local players from Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China.
Need some expert guidance? The programme includes tours with fair director Stephanie Kelly, artist-led jaunts, HK spotlight sessions (introducing you to local galleries) and walkabouts advising you on combining art with interiors. Enjoy interactive activities at the Creative Hub, including the Salad Bar print workshop and Children’s Art Studio, or visit the Young Talent and Fresh exhibitions for up-and-coming new names. Art salon TEDxWanChai (3pm, 20 May) is a must-see.
