Only In Macau…

LUXE Itinerary: Macau

High on any list of Hong Kong must-dos is a day trip to Macau. With its sleepy fishing villages, frenetic casinos and genteelly crumbling Portuguese colonial architecture, this neighbouring enclave offers an entirely different pace and urbanscape to the city. Make an early start at the Shun Tak Centre in Sheung Wan with either the TurboJet catamaran leaving every 15 minutes or the Sky Shuttle helicopter to arrive in high-flying style.

Start the trip with a cab ride to idyllic Coloane where the original Lord Stow’s Bakery has been making divinely creamy egg tarts for 25 years, and around the corner for a long and lazy lunch is Fernando’s expansive beach house with leafy gardens and Portuguese fare including excellent crispy pork.

Back you go now along the Cotai Strip past the towering casinos and into Macau’s historical centre, where antique treasures are to be unearthed at the Old House Gallery or Tong Yuk Tong’s ancestral print shop, before heading up the steps to the iconic ruins of São Paulo. The HK$2billion House of Dancing Water show offers spectacular evening entertainment from 5 or 8pm, and 3 Michelin star French dining with a twinkling harbour view awaits at Robuchon Au Dôme.

Or, for a more relaxed end to the day, Albergue 1601 is tucked away in an enchanting colonial courtyard and serves authentic Portuguese plates. Boas-vindas!
