Saddle Up!

August 29, 2013
Le Crazy Horse @ HKAPA

Artists, filmmakers and fashion designers the world over have been inspired by the beauty of the female form but perhaps none have more saucily celebrated the feminine curve than Alain Bernardin, founder in 1951 of the renowned Paris cabaret club Le Crazy Horse, which is still kicking up a storm today. And next in line on the dancing troupe’s first ever worldwide tour ‘Forever Crazy’ is Hong Kong, hosted by the Academy for Performing Arts in Wan Chai between 11th and 19th September.

Still using what Bernardin termed ‘l’art du nu’, women with identical body statistics artfully move around the stage covered only with a rainbow of lights or strategically placed accessories. With playful names like Flamma Rosa and Nooka Caramel, the dancers coquettishly blow kisses, high-kick over chairs, formation march in lines dressed as the Royal Guard, and create 60s-inspired silhouettes behind coloured screens.

It comes as no surprise that the beautifully uniform Crazy Horse girls have served as muses to luminaries like Jean-Paul Gaultier, David Lynch and Christian Louboutin over the years, and with the art of burlesque once more in the ascendant, there’s never been a better time to saddle up and enjoy the ride!
