The path that’s led fashion designer Johanna Ho to open a flagship in her native Hong Kong, almost two decades since she graduated from Central St. Martins alongside classmate Stella McCartney, has been littered with international recognition. Her first RTW collection roused the plaudits at London Fashion Week and was thereafter snapped up by Barneys NY; her feminine wares have been stocked in stores across the world from London’s Browns and Harrods to Australia’s Myer; her label boasted no less than 11 namesake stores across Tokyo... and that’s before we’ve even flipped through her rolodex of A-list clients including Lana Del Rey and local celebrities Karen Mok, Faye Wong, Miriam Yeung and Josie Ho.
Surprising then with this level of success, that only now does Ho feel ready to brace the teeming fashion scene in her home city, settling in with the Western heavyweights on Wyndham Street where local designers are still sadly scant. Although the odd splash of colour like royal blue and fuschia pink can be found in-store, Ho leans towards the locally-preferred palette of pastels, greys and creams; however it’s her cuts and techniques that prove innovative (think loopy seamed cigarette trousers, asymmetrical peplum tops, and delicate, floral embellished knitwear). Last season also saw the launch of her menswear edit, touting a mix of clean Savile Row lines and a modern hipster aesthetic. How’s that for a Ho-mecoming?
